It’s a question I’ve heard countless times from business owners
“How can they afford that car?”
“How have they bought a house like that?”
“They must be doing something clever with tax.”
Maybe.
But probably not.
The truth is, you very rarely know someone else’s financial story.
That dream home may have been inherited. It could have been bought years ago when prices were much lower. It might even belong to their partner. That brand-new prestige car? It might not be owned at all. It could be leased, hired, or paid for through a finance agreement that costs more each month than some people’s mortgage.
From the outside, success is easy to admire. Behind the scenes, the reality is often very different.
As business owners, we can waste a huge amount of energy comparing ourselves to everyone else. We start chasing someone else’s version of success instead of asking ourselves a much more important question:
What do I actually want?
For some people, it really is the dream house and the luxury car. For others, success means finishing work at 3pm to watch their children play football. It means taking six weeks off in the summer. It means sleeping well at night because they aren’t worrying about debt. Neither is right or wrong. The danger comes when we start making financial decisions based on assumptions.
I’ve heard people say, “My mate puts everything through the business,” or, “Someone told me it’s tax efficient to buy a luxury car through the company.”
Maybe it is.
Maybe it isn’t.
Tax isn’t a collection of shortcuts and rumours. Every business is different, and what works brilliantly for one company could be expensive or completely inappropriate for another. The people with the loudest opinions are rarely the ones with the right answers. If your goal is to build wealth, create freedom and enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard for, stop measuring your success against somebody else’s highlight reel.
Find someone who understands your business, your goals and the tax rules, then build a plan that’s right for you. Because the most successful business owners I know aren’t trying to keep up with anyone else.
They’re simply building the life they actually want, and that is where the real success lies.
